About "veil"
I know a woman who felt that she was in the wrong place and wanted to get out. The place that is familiar to her and was once comfortable could no longer keep her happy. She did not feel alive and desired a change or an adventure, but the wrong place was all she knew and the unknown is scary. Nevertheless, she chose the unknown because she could no longer sustain the pain of feeling trapped. "veil" is my attempt to portray the circumstances and complex feelings of being trapped. The feelings range from passive resignation to obvious struggle. Some images require the viewer to take two steps forward to see into a figure; in other images the figure is pushing itself forward, almost in movement, toward the viewer. This work is partly inspired by the short story, "The Yellow Wallpaper," by Charlotte Perkins Gilman (1860-1935) |
